 BRDA CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FESTIVAL

Šmartno / Goriška Brda, 12 to 14 September 2019

Brda Contemporary Music Festival, the festival of creative music and improvisation, is coming back to Šmartno from 12 to 14 September 2019 for the ninth time – right in the heart of Goriška Brda that connects the Slovenian, Friuli and Italian cultures. This connection is dedicated to achieving the most important goal of the festival: to create possibilities for musicians in the area between Italy and Slovenia.

The festival is the gathering point, where modern creative music meets other artistic genres, from visual arts to video and dancing. The festival is created and lives in the medieval village of Šmartno, thus enriching the environment and opening it up to the European panorama along the former border.

This year's festival starts on Thursday, 12 September 2019, at 19:00, with the opening of the photo exhibition by Nada Žgank and musical performance by Jošt Drašler and dance performance by Andreja Podrzavnik. This will be followed by the concert of English violinist Philipp Wachsmann at St Martin's Church, the first day will finish with the performance by Brazil saxophonist Ivo Perelman, who will join in duet with Zlatko Kaučič, who is also the artistic curator of the festival.

This year's workshop will be mentored by Gerry Hemingway, the legendary American drum player, who will also have his solo performance on Friday, 13 September 2019. Other internationally distinguished performenrs who will perform at the ninth festival includeSophie Agnel, Tom Jackson, Daniel Thompson, Tanja Feichmair, Luciano Caruso and Tomaž Grom.

On Saturday, 14 September 2019, the House of Culture will at 18:00 host a special event dedicated to poetry: the intertwining of poetry and music by reading the verses of Veronika Dintinjana and Novella Cantarutti (read by Aida Talliente and Veronika Dintinjana), accompanied by musical improvisations of Ingrid Mačus and Flavio Zanuttini.

This year's festival will be dedicated to creating the Italian and Slovenian scene, where young musicians will create music together with distinguished musicians and continue their work.
