Church of Virgin Mary on the Lake, Golo Brdo

According to legend, the church was built in the 13th or 14th century by a count in gratitude for the life of his son, who fell into the abyss below the altar. It is interesting that the church, with its rectangular nave, triangular chancel and bell tower visible from a distance, which was enlarged in the 16th century, is called Mary on the Lake, even though it stands on top of a hill. The fact is that behind the altar today there is a hole from which you can hear the sound of the water. The beautifully restored chapels add a special charm to the climb. The church is still medieval, but later restored. The most important late Gothic sculpture of the Virgin Mary with Jesus stands in a niche by the main entrance. The hill became an important archaeological site after 1997. Excavations have confirmed the occupation of the hill from the Early Iron Age through the Early to Late Antiquity as a document of the Roman penetration into this part of our country.
