Medana

Medana, a picturesque wine-growing village with a strong cultural vibe, is certainly worth a stop and a visit. Here you will have the opportunity to get up close to the birthplace of the great poet Alojz Gradnik, who, more than any other poet, was able to express the nature of Brda people in his numerous collections of poetry. Ludvik Zorzut was born in the same house and was able to portray the life of Brda people in a more folk-like way, often in dialect and with many ethnological motifs.

At the home of famous Medana winemakers, you can see collections of artworks created during the MMMart painting colonies. The town has a beautiful view of the Vipolže plain, which Mussolini is said to have wanted to dam and create an artificial lake and hotels alongside it.

For four decades, the traditional rehearsal of the Brda choirs has been held in the cooperative building in Medana, and the Alma Gallery has been shaping the cultural pulse of the village for the last few years.

The feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary or so-called “Rožn'ca”, celebrated on 15 August, is widely known, and a procession takes place in the village, when the village boys carry a 500-kilogram statue of the Virgin Mary to the nearby chapel. The procession is followed by a gathering in the village centre.
